Dearest Danicha,
We celebrated your third birthday last weekend at your Philly home with some of your favorite people. We were priming you for almost a week before in anticipation of your big day, frequently asking you questions like 'so..what's special about next Saturday?", It's your birthday!!.You have not been to a lot of birthday parties with other kids and hence you don't have a great idea as to what exactly it is.I explained to you that its been three years since you dived into planet earth from Amma's baby pouch. I also didn't forget to add a quick comment on the the big milestone you have not met as you turn three - bladder control.
Amma could sense the palpable excitement in you as the day approached as you seemed to realize that you are the center of attraction of the day. I had thought about a themed birthday party for you. But I couldn't choose a theme that best fits you except for cars ( which was the theme for your second birthday party). Amma and Appa went to Party city on the morning of your birthday ( Amma being a procrastinator) . We looked around and settled with decorations for a 'Spider man' themed birthday party as he is the only superhero you could identify in pictures. Don't worry, now that you are three Amma will slowly liberalize restrictions on your screen time and we will learn about all Disney super heroes together.
My first memory of me as a child is from my third birthday. I was with my Amma ( or Amamma as you dearly call her) at Varkala naturopathy center. I was given a bag of sweets to distribute to all the people at the center and I remember walking into a spacious room that belonged to the 'chief doctor' of the center. He cheerfully wished me 'Happy Birthday' and in exchange gave me something I have never seen before; a bright red shiny disc at the end of a tiny stick and that day I tasted my first lollipop. This is one of the most cherished memories from my early childhood and I wanted to replicate something similar for my Danichan who has never had lollipops before. After cutting your birthday cake and going on a short ride on your new green bike, all of us had lollipop treats together. We had a lot of fun doing ' customary cheers ' bumping our lollipops, exchanging lollipops to try new flavors and examining our tongues after finishing each lollipop to see what color it has taken on. I didn't count how many lollipops you ate, you are excused to go into sugar hyperactive coma on your birthday.
I had promised myself not to yell at you on your special day; however you tested my patience to its ends when you refused to change your diaper for almost an hour. We had a short tussle and you shed crocodile tears for a few minutes. But we made up with each other after another round of lollypop treat and Danichan was back to his happy mode again.
You love outdoors and of course your birthday wouldn't be complete if we didn't step outside. You rode your bike outside on the sidewalk with Joepa and me for about half an hour. We also had fun blowing lots of bubbles and solving word puzzles from Nithinappa.
You enjoyed your birthday so much that the next day morning you asked me" Is today my birthday too?" You were quite disappointed learning that birthdays come only once a year.
Dearest Danicha, You are the center of our universe, our precious treasure. I get to relive the life of a child with you every day.
